A LETTER FROM OUR FOUNDER

“Healing happens in community.’’

Founder’s Letter

The belief that inspired the creation of Bahali and continues to guide our work today.

Dear Friend,

Bahali was created from a simple belief: emotional wellness should be accessible, culturally relevant, and rooted in community.

Over the years, I have had the privilege of supporting individuals and families through trauma, grief, caregiving challenges, recovery, and life’s many transitions. Through that work, I witnessed not only the struggles people carried, but also the remarkable resilience, strength, and hope that emerge when people are supported by caring communities.

I also noticed something that stayed with me.

Many Caribbean individuals and families were navigating significant emotional challenges, yet culturally relevant emotional wellness resources remained limited. While support existed, too few resources reflected Caribbean voices, experiences, traditions, and realities.

Again and again, I encountered people who were carrying burdens in silence. Some were recovering from personal loss. Others were navigating family responsibilities, financial stress, migration, caregiving demands, or the emotional impact of disasters and community hardship. Many were searching for support that felt familiar, relevant, and connected to their lived experiences.

Over time, it became clear that something more was needed.

Not simply more information, but resources that honored culture. Resources that reflected community. Resources that approached emotional wellness with dignity, compassion, and respect.

Bahali was born from the belief that healing should feel familiar.

It should honor culture.
It should reflect community.
It should be grounded in dignity and respect.

Today, Bahali works to expand access to culturally grounded emotional wellness resources across Caribbean communities and throughout the diaspora through education, storytelling, research, partnerships, disaster recovery initiatives, and prevention-focused programs.

Our vision is simple.

We envision communities where emotional wellness is understood, valued, and supported. Communities where people no longer feel they must struggle alone, and where individuals and families have access to the knowledge, tools, and support they need to thrive.

Thank you for taking the time to learn about Bahali and for being part of this journey.

Together, we can help create a future where healing happens in community, support is within reach, and every person has the opportunity to flourish.

Because healing happens in community. And every mind deserves peace.

Warmly,

Marsha Smith
