LETTER FROM THE FOUNDER OF BAHALI

Dear Community,

When I created Bahali, it was born from a simple truth: in the Caribbean, we know how to rebuild roofs, repair roads, and restore power after a storm—but we are rarely given the space to restore ourselves. Our emotional well-being, our grief, our fear, and our quiet exhaustion often remain unspoken, tucked beneath the expectation that we must always be “strong.”

But strength does not mean silence.
And healing is not a luxury—it is a necessity.

Bahali exists to honor this truth.

Our mission is deeply rooted in our culture, our resilience, and our shared history. We create culturally relevant emotional-support tools for children, families, and communities impacted by natural disasters and adversity. We believe that healing should reflect who we are—our stories, our rhythms, our Caribbean ways of connecting, comforting, and caring for one another.

Too often, emotional pain is misunderstood or dismissed. Many of us grew up hearing “pray about it,” “shake it off,” or “others have it worse.” While faith and perseverance are powerful sources of strength, they should never replace support. In our region, the stigma around mental health has kept too many people suffering quietly. Bahali is here to change that narrative—not with judgment, but with compassion, education, and culturally grounded tools that feel familiar and safe.

Through our storybooks, coping guides, community healing circles, youth programs, and trauma-informed resources, we want every child and adult to know:
Your feelings matter. Your healing matters. And you deserve support that reflects your community, your culture, and your lived experiences.

We are committed to making emotional well-being accessible, relatable, and shame-free. Whether a family is recovering from a hurricane, a community is navigating collective grief, or a child is learning to name their feelings for the first time—Bahali stands with them.

Thank you for believing in this mission, for sharing it, and for helping us build a Caribbean where emotional recovery is not an afterthought, but a cornerstone of resilience.

With hope and heart,
Dr. Marsha Smith
